BMW G20 Rear Spoiler Impact

A private client approached us to analyze how a subtle rear spoiler affects the aerodynamics of the BMW G20. Using detailed airflow and pressure simulations, we compared the completely stock vehicle against a version fitted with a small trunk spoiler to determine whether such modifications provide real aerodynamic benefits or are purely visual.


The analysis revealed several interesting results. While the stock BMW G20 already features relatively efficient airflow characteristics, the addition of the rear spoiler noticeably reduced airflow separation at the rear of the car and improved overall flow stability. The spoiler also generated measurable rear downforce, improving aerodynamic balance and high-speed stability without increasing drag.


One of the most surprising findings was that aerodynamic drag slightly decreased with the spoiler installed. At 72 km/h, the power required to overcome drag dropped from approximately 3702W to 3638W. The lift coefficient also improved from slight positive lift to negative lift, proving that even a small rear spoiler can create real aerodynamic effects.


This project focused confirms that adding spoiler does not always enhance drag.
